Karen Blixen

The Karen Blixen Museum, located at the base of the Ngong Hills, is one of Nairobi’s most popular tourist sites. It is the former home of the famed Out of Africa novelist Karen Blixen. From 1917 to 1931, Karen Blixen lived in the house and maintained a coffee farm. The preserved colonial country house, a kitchen in a separate structure, a coffee-drying factory in the woods, and an agricultural institution in the surroundings are open to the public today.

Karen Blixen’s and her husband’s furniture and photographs and books are also exhibited. Visitors are guaranteed to have a fantastic time at the museum as Karen Blixen’s story and colonial Kenya are brought to life by enthusiastic tour guides.

Bomas of Kenya has reconstructed traditional villages with homesteads or bomas, each replicating the traditions of major ethnic groups.

There is also a big theatre, where groups perform traditional dances and music from time to time. The performances are considerably more fun when the audience participates. Within Nairobi, Bomas of Kenya is definitely worth your time.

Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park is located roughly about seven kilometers from Nairobi’s skyscrapers. The park is a wildlife paradise and a rhino reservation, protecting over 50 critically in danger of extinction animals. In addition to rhinos, the wetlands are home to lions, gazelles, buffaloes, warthogs, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, ostriches, and more than 400 kinds of birds.

Nairobi National Park is also famous for ivory burning. Now marked a monument, this is the place where President Moi lit a fire in 1989, burning 12 tons of elephant tusks and rhino horns, bolstering the country’s conservation image on the international arena. Other than the fantastic wildlife, enjoy a lunch picnic in the warm weather in nature. The park also has three campsites and walking trails for hikers.
