The British missionary and explorer Doctor David Livingstone was the first European to witness the great falls in 1855. He named the falls after Queen Victoria in England.

Before it was named Victoria falls, Locals had named it Mosi-oa-Tunya, which means ‘The Smoke That Thunders.

During the wet season, Victoria Falls cascades 500 million liters per minute, descending at 61 m (Devil’s Cataract), 83 m (Main Falls), 99 m (Rainbow Falls), and 98 m (Eastern Cataract).

  1. It Has Several Gorges

Six gorges exist around Victoria Falls. The second gorge, which is around 2 kilometers, is the boiling pot located right under the falls.

  1. It Is Found In Two National Parks

Victoria Falls is part of two national parks.

The first is the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, located in Zambia. Mosi-Oa-Tunya means the smoke that thunders,” describing the waterfall. The second is Victoria Falls national park in north-western Zimbabwe. It safeguards the Zambezi River’s east and south banks.

Victoria Falls has numerous rock pools that have been formed due to years of erosion. The Devil’s pool at the edge of the falls is the most popular and daring of these. To reach this all-natural infinity pool, fearless travelers take a rocky walk and swim in the Zambezi before falling into a swimming hole that pushes them to an edge where a rock lip allows them to watch the cascading waters below.

February to May is its best month.

Although most of its trails are on the Zambian side, ironically, this side will only let you see up to 30% of Victoria Falls. Meanwhile, the trails on the Zimbabwe side will allow you to see roughly 80% of the falls.
